The Faculty’s Future concept

Classification within the research structures of the University of Leipzig

The faculty is one of the driving forces in the FPB ReCentGlobe and Humanities in a Digital Age. It is strategically aligned with and supports the Initiative for Excellence in essential research-related issues, including the appointment of professors.

Promotion of project proposals

The faculty will provide a total of 2 x 0.5 FTE for 1 year each as an impetus for the development of project applications. Professors and young academics are eligible to apply. The Pre-Doc-Award is a model for this. The Vice Dean is responsible for the development of criteria, the appointment and management of a commission.

Implementation is subject to the following funding conditions: a. the reallocation of 0.5 FTE (previously: ethnology) from the Pact for the Future, b. a faculty fund, which is fed by job management (self-control from around 2022).

Stabilisation of student numbers

• Double Bachelor: The faculty facilitates the possibility of studying two Bachelor's programmes at the same time. It clarifies the legal framework and specifies the duration of studies.

• Introduction of a preparatory academic year: The faculty will examine the possibilities of a preparatory academic year or a comparable joint study programme by 2025.

• Plan A and Plan B: Special counselling programmes are being developed to reduce the number of dropouts. To this end, the existing mentoring position is to be made permanent.

• Internationalisation of MA programmes: The MA Anthropology, MA African Studies and MA Chinese Studies programmes are taught in English.

• Teaching as a cross-cutting theme in the faculty

• Elective subject Regional Sciences: The faculty will conceive and implement a large elective subject Regional Studies by 2025, which will be fed by the existing elective subject Non-European Cultures as well as other existing courses in the faculty. It will cooperate with similar initiatives in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy.

• Elective subject Museum Didactics: The faculty will design and implement a large elective subject Museum Didactics/out-of-school teaching by 2025, which will be fed by courses already existing in the faculty.

• Study programme Material Culture: Until 2025, the faculty will examine whether/how a complementary/combined study programme Material Culture could be created across faculties.

• Teaching simulation: The faculty is examining in which areas joint teaching would be useful in order to be able to invest time and money in joint teaching projects/study programmes.

• Teaching profession: The existing teacher training programmes in history and art at the faculty are to be prospectively supplemented by the subjects Chinese (implementation/SMK) and Arabic (evaluation phase) with the ability to combine them.

BUNDLING AND VISUALISATION OF TRANSFER ACTIVITIES

• Development of transfer visibility and communication, together with the Centre for Transfer (Dornberger). BMBF application until 2022.
• Continuous contact with non-university fields of practice (including alumni work).

• For the implementation of transfer concepts at the faculty, 0.5 FTE for up to 3 years is to be awarded - subject to funding reservation (see above)

Museums and collections

The visibility of the Faculty's museums and collections will be improved by

• The museum educational initiative "Five in One" of the Egyptian Museum, Museum of Antiquities, the Custody, the Ancient Orientalist and Pre- and Early Historical Collections
• Implementation of the "Leipzig Culture Mile" in Goethestraße with the Egyptian Museum, Museum of Antiquities and other collections of the UL
• Improve/systematise networking with Grassi (SKD) and other municipal museums
• Consolidation and profiling of a museum didactic study programme
• Further development of the collection initiative

DOCTORAL AND HABILITATION REGULATIONS

Revision of the doctoral and postdoctoral regulations with regard to the ability of GSGAS and important sponsors (DFG) to connect to the faculty regulations.

The faculty aims to recruit outstanding young researchers* (Emmy Noether Research Groups, ERC Grant, Heisenberg, and comparable)

"Ancient World"

Promotion of a focus on the "Ancient World" (Ancient history, prehistory and early history, archaeology of the Mediterranean region, Egyptology, Ancient Oriental Studies, as well as, if necessary, in the PhilFak Latin Studies, Greek Studies, Byzantine Studies; in the Faculty of Theology various disciplines are supported. Professorships in the Faculty of Theology). Coordination of current and upcoming appointments (Ancient History, Egyptology, Archaeology)

Review and adaptation of the study programmes (BA Archaeology of the Ancient World, Archaeology and History of Ancient Europe, MA Archaeology, Classical Antiquity, History and Literature). 2025 Review of the development of the "Old World" and adaptation to strategic goals of the faculty until 2030

Medium-level structure

The Faculty strives to achieve an appropriate ratio of LfbA and WiMi, as well as of temporary and permanent mid-level construction sites, in line with the structure of the subjects. The proportion of employees on temporary contracts* in budget posts should not exceed 37%.

Historical seminar

Relief of the area of modern/new history through the early occupation of history didactics, as well as the acquisition of a Heisenberg position (replaced by the van Laak professorship)

art Studies

In order to intensify the exchange within the pillar, joint activities are to culminate in lecture series, a research training group and a joint project. Cross-cutting topics could be: the arts and cultures of the GDR and their transformation after 1989; links with Eastern Europe under the conditions of globalisation; cultural transfer as a methodological approach.

regional studies

Profiling of a philologically based regional science by filling the professorships of Arabic and Islamic Studies (2022) and African Studies (filling a junior professorship with tenure track in 2026, which is brought forward; commitment to VW) to complement the focal points.

In future, the faculty's internal procedure for negotiating the specific orientation, call for tenders and composition of the Commission will be systematically applied.

Ancient history (W3)

The professorship will be advertised with a view to the focus to be developed on the "Old World" and a focus on Digital Humanities. The future holder of the professorship Egyptology is to participate in the commission.

History of the Middle Ages (W3)

The strategic orientation of the professorships is advertised regionally for Central/West/Northern/Southern Europe.

Ethnology (W3)

The professorship is advertised as a corner professorship of the GKR/Regional Sciences and in the context of the research profile line "ReCentGlobe".

Japanese Studies (W3)

The professorship is advertised in the context of the "ReCentGlobe" research profile line and in connection with established subject structures as a regional science based on cultural studies in the broadest sense.

Arabic and Islamic Studies (W3)

The professorship will be advertised in the context of the FPL "Language and Culture in the Digital Age" as well as for the profiling of a philologically based regional science.

Art History (W3)

The professorship will be opened up to Global Art History with potential for connections to the regional studies pillar, the university's profile lines and external museums and institutions. The basic teaching and research in the field of European art history is to remain assured.
