TASKS OF THE DEANERY

Responsibilities

The Dean leads the Faculty, chairs the Faculty Council, executes its decisions and is responsible to it. She is responsible for all faculty affairs, unless otherwise provided for by law or the Basic Regulations. This includes in particular

  • strategic development of the Faculty
  • Structural Planning
  • Target agreements between faculty and university
  • allocation of posts and resources in consultation with the Faculty Council
  • Right of supervision and instruction with regard to the proper performance of teaching and examination obligations and tasks in the supervision of students
  • Delegation of tasks in research and teaching to vice dean and dean of studies
  • Chairman of the Habilitation Commission of the Faculty
  • Moderation of conflicts in the faculty
  • Communication between Rectorate and Faculty

Responsibilities

The Dean of Studies is responsible for curricular and quality management in accordance with the responsibilities laid down in the Saxon Freedom of Institutions of Higher Education Act, the Basic Regulations, the EVALUATION REGULATION, the ORDER ON THE CURRICULUM REPORTING PROCEDURE and the QUALITY MANAGEMENT MANUAL of the UL.

Within the Faculty of History, Arts and Area Studies he is responsible for all study matters by virtue of his office.

This means that he

  • is a member of all fourteen study commissions of the faculty and chairs them
  • is responsible for the evaluation
  • is responsible for the teaching report on behalf of the dean
  • is responsible for internal accreditation on behalf of the Dean
  • is the contact for students in special crisis situations

The Dean of Studies takes part in meetings regularly or as required to coordinate study matters within and across faculties. He is supported in his work by the staff of the Office of Student Affairs, who are particularly active in an advisory capacity in the area of curricular management.

On behalf of the Dean, the Dean's Council manages the day-to-day administration of the faculty, in particular :

  • handling personnel, budget and graduation matters
  • administrative preparation, monitoring and support for appeal matters
  • Advising the dean, the managing directors of the institute and the faculty members in administrative matters
  • Support of the management, planning and scientific organisational activities of the faculty management including the preparation of conceptual planning and strategic development and structural decisions
  • Preparation and follow-up of the meetings of the Faculty Council
  • Cooperation with the central university administration, the university management and other faculties

STUDY OFFICE

The staff of the Faculty's study office support the institutes in the revision of study documents, in quality and examination management and in semester planning in AlmaWeb. Students will find help with module enrolment and interdisciplinary study counselling, such as changing programmes and compensating for disadvantages.

Responsibility

The Curricular Managers in the Office of Student Affairs are the central contacts for all institutes of the faculty with regard to

  • the modification and revision of study documents
  • the mapping of the study documents in AlmaWeb
  • Cooperation agreements with other subjects
  • the evaluation of courses and study programmes

The Examination Office is responsible for all documents produced in the context of examinations and examination certificates. The tasks include

  • the output of the Transcript of Records (an overview of the work done so far)
  • the registration of theses
  • the issuing of certificates
  • Information on marking, examination dates, repeat examinations
  • Exhibition for BaföG on services rendered

FACULTY BOARD

The Faculty Council is the elected body in the faculty and is made up of all status groups (university lecturers, academic staff, other employees, students) as well as the Equal Opportunities Officer.

Responsibility

The Faculty Council is responsible for all faculty matters of fundamental importance, in particular

  • the adoption of the study and examination regulations,
  • the enactment of the doctoral and habilitation regulations,
  • proposals for the establishment, abolition and modification of study programmes,
  • the coordination of research projects,
  • Proposals for the faculties' target agreements with the Rectorate,
  • Statement of the Faculty on the University's target agreements with the State Ministry of Science and Art,
  • to secure their course offerings and to plan their study programmes according to the faculty's development plan,
  • Evaluation procedure according to §9,
  • Proposals for the preparation of structural and development plans for the faculty,
  • participation in the drafting of the university's business plan,
  • the opinion on the use of the posts and funds allocated to the faculty,
  • the implementation of the course guidance,
  • the appointment of appointment committees and proposals for the job description of university teaching positions.

The basis is the Saxon Freedom of Institutions of Higher Education Act (2012), section 88

The Dean's Office invites all members and students of the faculty to an open exchange of views. The faculty talks are intended to capture the mood of the faculty members and serve as preparation for strategies and concepts.

The elected faculty council includes representatives of all member groups and the equal opportunities representative. At our faculty, we attach great importance to ensuring that as many pillars as possible are represented in all member groups. As a rule, the Faculty Council is elected every three years.

In addition to the elected members, the extended Faculty Council includes all the faculty's university teachers. Matters on which the extended Faculty Council decides are regulated in § 88, paragraph 2 SächsHSFG.
